Another option, St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport (PIE) is even closer—just a 20-minute drive—but has fewer airline options.
Finally, if you are flying in early and want to hit up Disney or Universal you can fly into Orlando (MCO) and drive over. It is a 2-hour drive from Orlando to Clearwater.
Clearwater Beach is compact, walkable, and very golf-cart-friendly, so getting around is a breeze even without a rental car.
